State of the World, Refugees Welcome
Flags may define us, borders may divide us, but in silence, we are one.
Explore the state of your mind in the State of the World exhibition at the H&R Block Artspace at the Kansas City Art Institute.
Experience the Artspace in a unique way by joining us for an hour of guided meditation within the State of the World exhibition currently on view. The social and political tension of our time can make it difficult to find peace. Within the sanctuary of the Artspace, we will come together to discover that its’s possible to remain authentic in difficult times. Even though borders, flags and policies may confine us, we can lead a true existence, within our own personal boundaries.
Meditation teaches us to synchronize with our surroundings. Enfolded by works by 14 artists, we’ll co-exist with the artwork, co-mingling with it as if we could breathe in the artists’ intent.
By breathing and meditating collectively, we will not only explore our individual authenticity, but also harness the power of group meditation. Come together to raise the vibration.
One-hour guided meditations led by Meditation Instructor Lisa Murphy:
- Thursday, March 9 at 11:00 a.m. (The exhibition will open early at 10 a.m. for participants to view the exhibition before the meditation.)
- Wednesday, March 15 at 6:00 p.m. (The exhibition will stay open after 5:00 p.m. for participants to view the exhibition before the meditation.)
- Meditations held at the H&R Block Artspace at the Kansas City Art Institute, 16 East 43rd Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64111.
- Bring your own props for sitting or we will have cushions and chairs available.
- No meditation experience necessary.
- Please RSVP to Beverly Ahern at email@example.com.
About the exhibition:
State of the World, February 11 – March 18, 2017
State of the World offers a rich and complex story of the flag as a potent symbol and a marker of time, place, belief, union, and difference. While reminding us that shifts in larger systems often create turbulence, rifts, and possibilities for change, the artists invite us to think carefully about how we experience a sense of belonging, negotiate allegiances, and how we proclaim ourselves and our connectedness to the world around us.
About the Artspace:
Artists. Art. Ideas.
Dedicated to artists, art, and ideas since 1999, the H&R Block Artspace at the Kansas City Art Institute presents exhibitions of contemporary art and a range of public programs for a growing audience of students, educators, artists, and the general public. Support is provided by the H&R Block Foundation and the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency. Please visit our website for more information about public programs. Call 816-802-3571 to schedule a group visit or gallery talk with Artspace staff.
