Jana’s Beet Vodka + The Zelda

Beet Vodka & The Zelda

Gorgeous beet infused vodka in a glamorous cocktail

Jana is the proprietress of Sprout Community Garden in Kansas City where I had a plot before starting my own front-yard garden. Jana grows a mean garden and makes an even meaner beet vodka. Luckily, she was willing to share her secret recipe.

Use this fuchsia-colored vodka to make The Zelda (recipe below) or serve over ice.

  • 1. Peel and chop the beets and put them in a quart jar.
  • 2. Pour vodka over them to fill the jar, seal tightly and infuse for at least 10 days in a dark, cool spot, like a closed cupboard.
  • 3. The color will change almost immediately and will darken over time.
  • 4. When ready, strain vodka and serve, or chill until needed, like after a bad day at the office.
  • 5. To make a Zelda:
  • 6. Fill a cocktail class with ice; pour in a shot of beet vodka.
  • 7. Add a squeeze of fresh grapefruit juice, top of with Limonata sparkling water, stir, garnish with a grapefruit wedge and serve.
